Albert O. "Al" Van Cleemput, age 94, of Moline, died Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Trinity, Rock Island.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation is from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Burial is at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal with military honors conducted by Moline American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Al was born November 11, 1916 in Moline, the son of Triphon and Elodie Manhout Van Cleemput. He married Magdeline "Linda" Dhooge on August 24, 1947.
Al was employed as a mechanic by Lohse Automotive for 30 years, retiring in March of 1982. He was an army veteran of World War II. Al served in many battles including the Battle of Normandy. He entered the service as a basic training instructor, and was thrust into battle. Al was a P.O.W. and received 3 bronze stars and the Purple Heart. He was involved in many organizations and was a life member of the Friends Circle Club, Moline American Legion Post #246, the V.F.W., the P.O.W., AMVETS, and the 80th Division. Al was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moline. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, raising his garden and watching golf.
