Albert George Grill passed away at 6:20 p.m., Sunday, February 5, 2006 at St. Anthony's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Rock Island, IL. Albert was born April 28, 1920 in Melcher, IA to John and Theresia Grill. His parents were both Austrian immigrants who came to America in the early 1900's. He married Elizabeth Florence Stedman of Davenport, IA in 1941.
He was employed by Reynolds Engineering as a Tool and Die Maker and Gillman Manufacturing as a Chief Inspector. The U.S.A. Armament Command at the Rock Island Arsenal employed Albert as Special Items Manager and Supervisor Tools and Equipment. He was employed at the Arsenal for 20 years in various positions and retired in 1976. Albert was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 28, the Arsenal Officers' Club, and NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees). Albert graduated high school in Melcher, IA and attended Moline Community College and Augustana College. He completed a Tool and Die Apprenticeship and obtained further education through the Rock Island Arsenal and U.S. Army Logistics in Fort Lee, Virginia.
Albert enjoyed gardening and particularly loved the growing of roses. He enjoyed sharing his exceptional carpentry skills by building and repairing many items for family members. Albert's family was his life-long priority and he loved doing projects for his wife, daughters and grandson. In his earlier years, he loved to dance and shared this interest with the perfect dance partner, his wife. Al's life was a living example of unconditional love and self-sacrifice; of serious business and light-hearted fun; of an amazing appreciation of life and incredible courage. He nurtured his children and grandson with complete respect, unflagging energy, patience and good-natured fun.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth; two daughters, Carol Grill and Susan Schauenberg; son-in-law Robert Schauenberg; grandson and granddaughter-in-love, Trevor and Kyle Schauenberg; and various cousins, nieces and nephews. His parents, a sister, Gladys Pack; and two brothers, Frank and Joe Grill, preceded him in death.
Funeral and burial services for immediate family were February 10th with burial in Greenview Memorial Gardens, Silvis, IL Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. assisted the family. In lieu of donations of respect, Albert would have hoped that those who wish to honor his life would take a loved one to dinner, and maybe even dancing, to express their love to them. Giving to others was the tenet of his life.
The family wishes to express appreciation to Dr. Reynaldo Castro for his exceptional professional skills and complete empathy and patience with family concerns, and commitment to Albert's dignity. His caring heart will never be forgotten by Albert or the family. Respect and appreciation is also extended to the staff of St. Anthony's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rock Island for their services in the final months of Albert's life.
