Albert G. Zimmerman

August 10, 1925 — March 16, 2018

Albert G. Zimmerman, 92, of Rock Island, formerly of East Moline, died Friday, March 16, 2018, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601-38th Avenue, Moline.  Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.  Memorials may be made to the UT Foundation or to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Albert was born on August 10, 1925, in Chicago, the son of Herman and Therese Andresco Zimmerman.  He married Marilynn M. Kobel on September 6, 1947, in Danville, IL.  She preceded him in death in 1996.

Albert received a Bachelor of Science and later his Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois, where he also lettered in football and track.   He taught one year in Oakland, Illinois, where he was Head Football Coach before coming to United Township High School in 1951.  At United Township, he taught Social Studies and was Assistant Varsity Coach in Football and Track as well as Sophomore Basketball Assistant.  He served as Head Football Coach from 1963-1965 and assumed the Chairmanship of the Boys Physical Education Department in 1963 and later the Girls Department in 1974.  Albert also served as a member of the Driver Education Department since 1961.  He retired as the Head of the Health & Physical Education Department at United Township in 1985 after 35 years.

Albert was a member of various organization including Rock Island Workshop Committee, North Central Association Evaluation Team, Steering Committee for the North Central visiting United Township, and was a member of and served on the Editorial Committee for the I.A.H.P.E.R.,   Albert served as area co-chairman for the Northern District, service & equipment in 1984.  He also was a member of the Illinois Driver Education Association, the A.A.H.P.E.R., and the Augustana Teacher Advisory Council.  Albert received the Illinois Coaches Association “Award of Recognition” in the Guidance of Young Men in October of 1982.  He was the Vice-President of the East Moline Bowl Association from 1976-1977 and the Moline-East Moline Bowl Association from 1978-1980.  Albert held a First Aid Instructor Card.  He enjoyed golf, bowling, playing bridge and loved his time as a ticket taker and greeter at the United Township Boys basketball games until the age of 91.

Survivors include his daughters, Jan (Dale) Adamson, Julie (Jeff) Walter; grandchildren, Drew (Nicole) Adamson, Reid (Leslie) Adamson, Brandt (Bonnie) Adamson, Wade (Cristina) Adamson, Jamie Walter, Lyndsay Walter, Taylor Walter, and Bryan Walter; great grandchildren, Gianna, Genevieve, Maren, Hayden, Barrett, Carter, Lennox, Myla, and Bennett.
