Alfred Noakes

February 16, 1930 — October 3, 2014

The Rev. Alfred H. Noakes, III, 84, of East Moline, IL, went to be with the Lord, surrounded by family, on Friday, October 03, 2014.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church, 777 25th Avenue, East Moline. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, October 6, 2014, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and inurnment will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, East Moline.

Al was born on February 16, 1930, in Washington, D.C., the son of Alfred H. and Dorothy Allen Noakes, II. He married Margaret "Peg" Phelps on June 3, 1954, in Monmouth, IL.

Al attended Sterling College, where he met Peg and together they graduated in 1954. He graduated from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in May of 1958. Then in June of 1958, Peg and Al's son Dave was born.

Al and Peg then traveled to Coulterville, Illinois to their first home at Coulterville & Swanwick churches. Their son Paul was born while they were there. Al was in ministry for 3 years there.

Al and his family then moved to Mt. Carmel, Illinois where their children, Howard and Ruth, were born. Al served the church there for 5 years.

Following Mt. Carmel, Al served churches in Herrin, Illinois, and Marion, Indiana - where he was the Christian Education Director, and Vienna, West Virginia. Returning to Illinois, Al was the pastor at Gloria Dei in Rock Island for 10 years, followed by 9 years as pastor at the Whitehall and Carrolton churches. He also served as the Interim Pastor at the Presbyterian Churches of Sunbeam, Aledo, Fulton, Good Shepherd, Rock Island, and Broadway Rock Island.

Al attended Synod School at least 15 times, and taught a class one summer. He also helped teach at church summer camps, and was the Director a time or two. Al also served as the Chaplain of the Civil Air Patrol for 35 years and did some teaching for 4 of those years. He directed the Great Lakes staff college for 6 years, serving as chaplain for 3 of those years.

He was a member of the Presbytery of Great Rivers and attended First Presbyterian Church in East Moline. Alfred enjoyed reading all kinds of books, including mysteries. He also enjoyed his annual trips to Dyersville. More than anything, Al was an avid jokester and loved spending time with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 grandchildren, and son-in-law, Randy.
