Allen E. Schaefer, age 72, of Moline, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Thursday, December 20, 2007 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m.Friday, December 28, 2007 at First Evangelical Free Church. Moline. Visitation is from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue,Moline. Burial is in Riverside Cemetery, Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to National Federation of the Blind, 1800 Johnson Street, Baltimore, MD 21230 or First Evangelical Free Church of Moline.
Allen was born on December 18, 1935 in Muscatine, Iowa the son of Harry Jacob and Myrtle Balmos Schaefer. He married Ruth Anne Finders on August 16, 1957 at Ascension Chapel, Augustana College. She preceded him in death on January 23, 2005.
Allen was employed as a vocal and instrumental music teacher of grades 5-8 at Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Middle School in Mazon, IL. He graduated from Augustana College in 1957 where he majored in Music Education. He did advanced study at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. Allen served on State Music Committees for Illinois Elementary School Association and Illinois High School Association since 1972 and his students have won 1st place ratings in state competition. He also served on MVK District Leadership Committee from 1990-1994.
Allen was a member of the National Association of Blind Educators since 1970 and had served as the national treasurer, the NEA-IEA since 1968 where he served as local president of the MVK Education Association, the Music Educators National Conference since 1957 and the Illinois Music Educators Association since 1957. He was also a member of the Free Methodist Church of Mazon where he served as trustee, organist, and pianist; the National Federation of the Blind where he served at state president; the Gleaner Life Insurance Society where he received the outstanding service award, and the National Federation of the Blind, Prairie State Chapter where he served as president and received the outstanding Miller Service Award.. He was also nominated for National Blind Educator of the Year in 1990 and he was the only blind music teacher in the State of Illinois. He had been totally blind since 1968.
Survivors include several cousins Dr. William and Patty Herath of East Moline and Joanne and Dan McKirgan and their daughter Amanda Elshoff of Cedar Rapids, IA; special friends Marlow and Bob Groy of Moline and many other friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
