Alphonso “Al” P. Collins Jr., 82, of East Moline, passed away August 28, 2021, at UnityPoint Health Trinity Rock Island.
Visitation will be from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Monday, September 6, 2021, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline. Private family funeral will be held. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church Food Pantry.
Al was born on September 19, 1938, in Moline, the son of Alphonso and Mattie (Pennington) Collins Sr. He married Sharon Murphy on August 1, 1967, in Chicago. He attended Black Hawk College and Augustana College. He worked as a Foreman for International Harvester for 47 years. Al served in the United States Army in Germany during the Cold War. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church where he served in several capacities most recently the food bank. He enjoyed being outdoors and taking care of his yard in which, he took great pride. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed traveling, meeting new people and telling stories with lifelong friends.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Collins; children, Alphonso P. Collins III, Elizabeth (Joe) Greenwald; grandchildren, Elise, Naomi, Nina, & Chris; brothers, Mervyn (Carol) Collins, Jim (Karen) Collins, & Dean Davis; sister-in-law, Cathy Collins; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friend, Melvin Rummels.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Marion Collins.
