Arthur N. Johnson
Sept. 13, 1912 - November 18, 2009
Art's family is deeply saddened to announce the death of a very fine gentleman, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His was a constant and noble spirit.
Art lived his entire life in Moline and Rock Island. The son of George and Jennie Johnson, Art attended Moline public schools, graduating from Moline High School in 1930. He earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Augustana College in 1934. Art's career took him from Moline Water Works, to Rock Island Water Works, to Parr Instrument Company, Moline (1947-1986, retiring as Vice President-Technical Director). He remained interested in Parr's business activities and was an active member of the American Chemical Society until his death.
Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, nurtured Art's faith throughout his life. He taught Sunday School, served on many committees including church council, and had a positive influence on generations of Trinity members. He will be remembered with love and missed by many.
Art was also generous with his wisdom and commitment to Augustana College, Lutheran Hospital, Moline Public Library, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Christian Friendliness, Friendship Manor, and Trinity Health Foundation. From 1990 until 2009 he enjoyed volunteering at Trinity Hospital, West Campus. He gave generously to many charities.
Although active in his community, Art's first love was his family. He married his high school sweetheart, Helen Broderick in 1936. They raised two daughters who eventually gave them 7 grandchildren. Helen passed away in 1982. Art married Elsa Eihl in 1983 and gained 4 step-children, 9 more grandchildren, and one foster daughter. Elsa passed away in 2007. Art was also pre-deceased by his brother, Charles G. Johnson in 1969 and by his step-daughter, Margaret Eihl Lancaster in 2000.
Art will be remembered best for his kindness, his humor, his unfailing courtesy, his thoughtfulness, his eloquence in the appreciation of the efforts of others, his tolerance for human foibles, his constant availability to those in trouble, his enduring role of encourager, and his understanding and compassion for human weakness. Art was a man loved, respected, and trusted. The world is a better place because he was in it.
He will be deeply missed by his daughters, Noreen Casson (Jim) of Welland, Ontario, and Mary Sauer of Indianapolis, IN; his step-children, Elise Schilb ( Mike), Fred/Larry Eihl (Bert), Marjorie Buck (Jeff), and Nil Turkseven; sixteen grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his niece, Bev Graham and her daughters; his nephews Stephen Johnson, and Christopher Johnson, and their families.
Family will receive friends at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline on Friday, Nov. 20th from 4-7 p.m. Funeral will be at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1330 13th Street, Moline, on Saturday, Nov. 21st, at 11:00 a.m. Burial at Riverside Cemetery, Moline.
Art's family extends their special thanks to the staff at Friendship Manor, Rock Island for all their kindness and loving care.
Charitable donations to Trinity Lutheran Church, or Augustana College would be greatly appreciated by the family.
