Bernice Sophia Mason

Bernice Sophia Mason, 84, of Moline, IL, died Tuesday, September 13, 2016, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 19, 2016, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 4107 21st Avenue, Moline.  Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 2016, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline.  Entombment will be at Moline Memorial Park.  Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Bernice was born on January 20, 1932, in Thief River Falls, MN, the daughter of Albert and Jean Ruch Horter.  On December 17, 1955, she married Richard Mason in Thief River Falls.  They later divorced.  Bernice was the co-owner and operator of Whitey’s Pie Company for 13 years, from 1983 to 1995.  Although she retired in 1995, Bernice continued to work at Whitey’s as a baker for an additional 17 years, until 2012.

Bernice was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, where she loved to volunteer.  She also volunteered and worked at the Croatian Club and the Viking Club.  Bernice enjoyed baking, crocheting, and working in her yard and flower garden.

Survivors include her children, Jon Mason, Moline, IL, Kimberly Bartnicki, Colona, IL, Jeff (Michele) Mason, Longmont, CO, and Nancy (Dan) Sitzmore, Morrison, IL; sister, Elayne (Robert) Ottinger, San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Nathan, Ryan, and Brandon Mason, Amanda (Oscar) Herrera, Steve Simmon, Mason Sitzmore, and Emma Sitzmore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Jerry; siblings, Lucy, Polly, Vern, Cliff, Delores, Janice, and Loraine.
