Bert D. Carlson, 91, of Rock Island, IL, died Monday, October 24, 2016, at Friendship Manor, Rock Island, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, October 28, 2016, at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 2312 18th Avenue, Rock Island.  Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline, IL.  Burial will be in the Coal Valley Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by Moline American Legion Post 246.  Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church.

Bert was born on June 28, 1925, in Galva, IL, the son of Clyde C. and Ethel Griggs Carlson.  He married Gladys J. Clure on November 12, 1950, at Central Presbyterian Church in Rock Island.  He worked as a procurement officer for the Rock Island Arsenal for 33 years, retiring in 1982.  He also worked for IH for 3 years and taught students to play the organ.

Bert was a veteran, having proudly served during WWII in the United States Navy as a 3rd Class ships cook.  In 1945, he was honorably discharged and later became a member of the Moline American Legion Post 246.

Bert was an active member of First United Presbyterian Church and Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church where he was a choir member for many years.  He was also a member of Davenport Moose Lodge #28 as well as the Quad City Organist Society.  He loved to play the organ for both private parties and for Friendship Manor.  Bert liked to cook and to dance.  He especially enjoyed decorating outdoors for Christmas and working outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Carlson, Rock Island; daughters and sons-in-law, Jane & Todd Vandersnick, Geneseo and Julie & Bruce Romero, Rock Island; grandchildren, Orterio Villa, Scott Villa, Jeremy Romero, Bethany and Idris Okere, Caitlin Vandersnick; sister in law, Rose Carlson; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Karen Lynn Carlson; brothers, Curtis Carlson and Richard Carlson.
