Brian K. Nelson, age 60, of East Moline, died Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 23, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church, 777-25th Avenue, East Moline. Visitation is Thursday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, East Moline or the Music Department at Augustana College, Rock Island.
Brian was born June 21, 1951 in Ottumwa, IA, the son of Pastor Arnold and Eythol Barr Nelson. He graduated from Central High School in Omaha, NE in 1969 and from Augustana College in 1974. He married Shirlee J. Barta Nelson on November 15, 2008 in East Moline.
Brian was employed for 41 years for the Moline Dispatch Publishing Company, most recently as a copy editor. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of East Moline where he served as Director of Music for 28 years. Brian will be remembered for his commitment to music and theater in the Quad Cities area. He sang and performed with the Nova Singers, QC Chorale Arts, The Handel Oratorio Society, the Augustana Choir and the annual Messiah Concert at Augustana, Playcrafters, the Genesius Guild, Prenzie Players, the Sondheim Center in Fairfield, IA and many more. He especially treasured directing South Pacific at Countryside Theatre. Most recently he performed at the District Theater as Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar, Larry in Company and he sang Benjamin Britten's War Requiem in the Quad Cities and Minneapolis. He was an avid reader, and followed baseball and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
