Bryce E. Harthoorn, 69, of Princeton, Iowa, died on Thursday, May 19, 2011.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at Princeton Presbyterian Church, 630 3rd Street, Princeton, Iowa. Visitation will be from 3:00 ~ 7:00 P.M., Monday, May 23, 2011, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline, Illinois. Graveside service will be at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Saum Cemetery, Jasper County, Iowa. Bryce Eugene Harthoorn, the son of Johannes Otherius and Henrietta (Van Der Pol) Harthoorn, Jr., was born on March 16, 1942, at the family home in Monroe, Iowa.
He began his education in a one-room school house and graduated from Lynnville-Sully High School in May of 1960 with highest honors. He received his B.S. Degree in organic chemistry from Iowa State University and M.S. Degree in organic chemistry from Kansas State University.
He was united in marriage with Betty Jane (Dubiak) Harthoorn in Elmhurst, Illinois, on March 18, 1967. To this union, three children were born: Lisa Marie, Lori Kay, and Leah Jo.
Following his graduate studies, he worked as Director of Regional Programs with the Iowa Department of Environmental Quality (IDEQ), which eventually became the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
From 1976-1989, he worked as Supervisor for Environmental Control at the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works. The factory was later named the John Deere Component Works.
From 1989-2001, he worked as Staff Engineer, Environmental Control at Deere & Company Corporate Headquarters in Moline, Illinois.
Bryce served as Vice Chairman on the Iowa Association of Business and Industry Environmental Committee, Chairman of the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce Environmental Subcommittee, Member of the Title III Community Right to Know Local Emergency Planning Committee, Member of the Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission Advisory Committee on Resource Recovery and countless other committees.
He received his Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) Certification in 1994.
Memberships included the Air Pollution Control Association, the American Chemical Society, the John Deere Toastmasters Club, and the Air and Waste Management Association.
Bryce made his confession of faith in Jesus Christ at an early age. He was baptized in front of his home in the Mississippi River in 1998. He was an active member of the Princeton Presbyterian Church where he faithfully served as Elder. Along with his wife, he actively served on the church mission committee.
He also found interest in auctions, tractors, cars, photography, motorcycling, and travel.
Those left to honor his life include his adoring wife, Betty of Princeton; his three daughters and their families, Lisa (Dave) Watson, Lori (Jeff) Underwood and Macy, and Leah (Christopher) Stein and Martha and Nicholas; his brothers Donovan (Judy) Harthoorn and Kurt (Arloa) Harthoorn; his mother-in-law, Nettie Dubiak; sister-in-law, Darlene (Mike) Vazzano; Aunts and Uncles Wilda Nikkel, Iva (Marvin) Baarda, Dorothy Van Der Pol, and Donna (Duane) Brand; Nieces Denise James, Sarah (Brian) Dodge and Adrianna, and Heather Vazzano; Nephews Jeff Harthoorn and Sami, Joel (Liz) Harthoorn, Nick (Amy) Harthoorn and Kate, Brooke, and Aubrey, and David (Kristina) James, and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Henrietta; his sister, Gelene; his father-in-law, John Dubiak; his brother-in-law, Dennis T. Dubiak; his stepmother, Iva (Vander Krol) Arkema Harthoorn; Aunts and Uncles Geneva (Arnold) Ratcliff, John Nikkel, Melvin Van Der Pol, Frances Baarda and son-in-law Paul A. Peterson.
Bryce loved living life with his beloved wife of 44 years and enjoyed many cherished friendships with dear family and friends.
