Carol J. Hillis, 83, of Rock Island, finished her earthly race on Thursday December 14, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday December 16, 2023, at First Evangelical Free Church, Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Inurnment will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens at a later date. Memorials can be made to First Evangelical Free Church of Moline.
Carol was born March 26, 1940, in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Royal E. and Helen (Haug) Werth. She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1958 and later from Trinity College in Chicago, Illinois in 1963.
She was an active member of First Evangelical Free Church in Moline growing up in the church and being sent out from there to work for the Lord as a missionary teaching children of missionaries and children of expatriates working in Venezuela. She served in Venezuela as a missionary with the Evangelical Free Church of America from 1967 until retiring in 2010. She was joined in this ministry in 1976 by her future husband Alan Hillis. They later married on July 2, 1977, at First Evangelical Free Church.
Carol enjoyed sewing and needlework, cooking and baking, and entertaining visitors to Venezuela and friends made in the community.
Survivors include her husband, Alan Hillis; three sisters, Louise (Harry) Swanson, Susan Croumer, Julie Werth; numerous nieces and nephews, and special friends Ken Dickson and Shavonna Rhoden.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
