Carol June Loretz, 54, of Coal Valley, a reporter for The Dispatch and the Rock Island Argus, died Feb., 28, 2005 at home, of ovarian cancer.
Carol was born June 6, 1950, in Sacramento, CA; she was the daughter of Eric and Patricia Charlotte Loretz. She graduated from Elk Grove CA High School in 1968.
She graduated from the University of California, Davis, with degrees in political science and American studies. She also held a master's degree in journalism from the University of Illinois, and studied at several other colleges.
From 1976-1987, she worked on the assembly line at General Motors' Kansas City, KS works. During the Kansas City years, she was active in anti-apartheid, anti-nuclear power and other progressive political causes, and wrote for and helped edit "The Hammer," a civil rights magazine.
Additionally, she operated a snow-clearing business.
After obtaining her master's in journalism in 1989, she began work for The Dispatch/Argus in 1990, first covering the East Moline and environmental beats and later business and labor news. She was assigned to the Rock Island City beat when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2000. She worked intermittently there after.
She won numerous awards for her reporting work, most notably on stories about the working poor, the future of the United Auto Workers and contract-awarding practices at Rock Island Arsenal.
She is survived by her parents; a sister, Patricia Ann Loretz of Gaithersburg, MD., brother-in-law, Kenneth Christman, nephew Phillip, niece Claire Marie, all of Gaithersburg; brother, Frank Allan Loretz of Elk Grove; uncle and aunt, Donald and Laura Monseth, Herald, CA.; uncle Paul Franusich of Elk Grove. She was preceded by grandparents, Frank and Ida Loretz and Edwin and Marie Monseth; and an aunt, Ida Loretz Franusich.
Friends are invited to a memorial service from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2005 at the Quad City Botanical Center, Rock Island, IL. Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. Moline is handling the arrangements.
