Charles A. "Chuck" Dunlop, a long-time Moline resident, died Friday, July 2, 2010 at Park Vista Assisted Living Center in East Moline.
Funeral services will be held at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd, 6601-38th Avenue, Moline on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation is from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
Chuck was born September 13, 1921, in Columbia, South Carolina, to John and Bernie (Campbell) Dunlop. He was a 1939 graduate of Rock Island High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 and was stationed at Guadal Canal. On October 13, 1943, he married Louise Ellen Carlson in Rock Island. She died December 6, 2006.
Chuck started his career as a apprentice carpenter, then a journeyman union carpenter in home building and commercial and industrial building. From 1967 to 1984 he served as Business Agent for the Tri-City Carpenters District Council, and from 1984 to 1988 as Business Agent for Northwest Illinois and Eastern Iowa Council of Carpenters, the position from which he retired. From 1971 to 1984 he was also President of Carpenters Local 166 in Rock Island. He was a charter member of the Illinois Employee Benefits Corp., Geneva, Illinois, that furnished health and pension benefits for numerous carpenter local unions. He holds the Golden Card issued in 2000 for 50 years of membership in the Carpenters and Joiners Union. In 1998, he was inducted into the East Central Iowa/Northern Illinois AFL/CIO Hall of Fame.
His memberships included the Moline Vikings Club, Elks Lifetime Membership, Friends Circle Club, and VFW Post 2153 in Moline. He had also served as a Democratic Precinct Committeeman for many years.
He is survived by children Vicki (Charles) Teas, Davenport; Linda (Ed) Selander, Scott R. Dunlop, and Steven Dunlop, all of Moline. There are 4 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 8 step-great-grandchildren. Additional survivors are a sister, Helen Turner, Moline, and a brother, James Dunlop, Combine, Texas.
Chuck was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, four brothers, and a son, Gary.
