Charles Donald Sutton, 77, of North Port, Fla., passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, while under the care of Tidewell Hospices and Palliative Care in Sarasota, Fla. from congestive heart failure due to coronary artery disease.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Mar. 27, 2009, at Calvary Lutheran Church, 2900 Avenue of the Cities, Moline, Ill. Inurnment will follow at Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Ill. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion, Post 246. Memorial donations may be made to the Living Waters Church, PO Box 8064, North Port, FL 34290, to benefit the A Special Time Adult Respite Program.

He was born April 21, 1931 in Troy, Kan. to the late John and Grace Sutton and was the eldest child. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran stationed in Korea near the end of the war. Using the GI Bill of Rights, he graduated from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kan., with a degree in Geology. He has two children, Megan Wills and Paige Saefkow, from his first marriage. He married Carol M. Boney in Berne, Switzerland on April 30, 1976.
Charles' career spanned over 30 years working for the Department of Defense, supporting the Army Stockpile Reliability Program as a Quality Assurance Specialist (Ammunition Surveillance) (QASAS). This career field has a mandatory rotation plan allowing Charlie to work, not only at the Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Illinois, but overseas and many other places in the United States. He especially enjoyed the chance to live and work in different parts of the world. He retired in 1986.
He spent the last 14 years of his life living in North Port, Fla. He was an avid reader who loved Mark Twain. He loved the Cubs and went to many games at Wrigley field during his lifetime. He was a late-blooming oil painter, having recently done a showing of his work for local residents. He was a member of Living Waters Lutheran Church and a proud participant in A Special Time Adult Respite Program, both in North Port, Florida.
Survivors include his wife, Carol, North Port, Fla.; his step-son and his wife, Christopher and Andrea Bonney, Winfield, Ill.; his daughter and her husband, Megan and Ron Wills, Yuma, Colo.; and his daughter and her husband, Paige and Dean Saefkow, Dubuque, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Kathryn and Nathan Bonney, Winfield, Ill.; Ellie, Mitchell, Scott, and Troy Wills, Yuma, Colo.; Anna Sutton, Dubuque, Iowa; his brother and his wife, Dale and Chris Sutton, Wathena, Kan.; and his brother and his wife, Roger and Frances Sutton, American Canyon, Calif. Numerous loving nieces and nephews survive him. In addition to his parents, two sisters, Mary Dittemore and Louise Saltzman, and a brother, Paul Sutton, preceded him in death.
