Clarence Manthei age 86 of Port Byron died July 8th, 2005 at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.
Friends and relatives are welcome to attend a memorial and Masonic service at the home of his daughter, Betty, at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 11th. Betty's home is located at 2420-179th Street North, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the veteran's organization of your choice or Immanuel Lutheran Church, East Moline. Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. is assisting the family.
Clarence was born on September 18, 1918 in Kansas City, MO the son of Herman and Mary Utecht Manthei. He married Sarah Asay Kapinski on February 3, 1966 in Angleton, TX. She preceded him in death.
Clarence was a boiler maker for Dow Chemical Company in Texas, last working in 1979. He retired to Missouri and Texas in 1979. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific.He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal in 1942, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three bronze stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Body and a Shriner. He was a member of the Boiler Makers Union and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He traveled extensively throughout the Midwest and Texas as a boiler maker.
Survivors include his step-daughter Betty and spouse Charles Armstrong of East Moline, brothers Paul and Sam, sisters Gladys and Martha, several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his step-daughter Florence McCulloh and step-son Frank Kapinski.
