Clarence J. Mueller

January 22, 1938 — July 17, 2013

Clarence John Mueller, 75, of Moline, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Heartland Healthcare Center. Services will be held Monday, July 22 at 11:00 at First Covenant Church, 3303 - 41 Street, Moline. Visitation will be Sunday, July 21 from 2:00 - 5:00 at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 - 38 Avenue, Moline. Memorials may be made to First Covenant Church, Moline or Christian Friendliness, Moline, ministries that were dear to him. Burial will at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Buffalo Prairie Township.

Clarence was born at Lutheran Hospital, Moline, IL on January 22, 1938 to John F. and Olga (Mennicke) Mueller. He loved growing up on the family farm in Taylor Ridge. Clarence was raised in a Christian family and by Zion Lutheran Church. He graduated from Reynolds High School and the American Institute of Commerce. He also attended Black Hawk and Augustana Colleges.

He met the love of his life, Joanne Olson, while working at John Deere Plow Works and retired after more than 40 years from John Deere Seeding Group. He and Jo accepted a call to serve at Christian Friendliness' Camp Summit as caretakers and food service directors in their early retirement.

He married Joanne (Jo) on April 18, 1970 in Moline. He joined First Covenant Church at that time where he lived out his faith, lovingly serving on the Diaconate and Trustee boards, teaching Sunday School, and being a youth counselor for 25 years. There he began with his good friend, Rev. Jim Lundell, a garden to feed the hungry. The "two old farmers," as they were known, spent much time in the shade, discussing life. Through that garden, he became "Papa" to many in the Nepali refugee community.

Left to celebrate his life are his wife, son David J. Mueller, daughter Kristine M. (Kurt) Barker, and grandsons, John and Paul Barker, "adopted" children Lachu and Purna Sapkota, Arjun and Prem Bhattarai, and Mongal and Bishnu Garung. Also surviving are brothers Rev. Gilbert, Rev. Howard (Joyce), and Stanley L. (Dorothy) Mueller and sister Jane A. (Rev. Gary) Harroun, and many nieces and nephews. Surviving are his Olson family, mother-in-law, June, Robert L. (Betty), James R. (Susan), Rev. Donald C. (Gabrielle) and Jan L. (Nancy), and many more nieces and nephews. He always cherished his friendship with Robert Sproul, of East Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents.
