Curtis Butterfield, age 36, of Rock Island, died Sunday, May 29, 2011 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Curtis was born September 22, 1974 in Moline, the son of Edgar and Sharon Rissing Butterfield. He married Sarah Mason on November 5, 2005 in Rock Island.

Curtis attended Clemson University and graduated from Western Illinois University. He was employed as a Biology and Environmental Science teacher at Moline High School since 1997 where he also coached the Freshman/Sophomore Academic Team. Curtis was active in various local organizations including Black Hawk State Park, QC Natural Area Guardians, and Illinois Master Naturalists. He was passionate about sustainable environments, prairie restoration, music, and his dog, Cooper. Curtis held a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Visitation is from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Per Curtis' wishes, cremation rites will be accorded following visitation. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to "Citizens to Preserve Black Hawk Park Foundation" at Black Hawk Park, Rock Island, IL.
