Don L. Mitchell, 84, of Moline, passed away March 31, 2009 at Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf following an extended illness.
A memorial service will be held at Community of Christ Church, 1525 48th Street Place, Moline on April 25th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held at National Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to Community of Christ Church, Outreach International, or University of Iowa, 1-452 Bowen Science Building, Iowa City, Iowa 52242.
Don was born on May 8, 1924, in Lingle, Wyoming, the son of Lee Oren and Elvin Nixon Mitchell. Don met his sweetheart and wife, Lucille (Lucy) in Moline, IL during summer break from the University of Iowa, where he later earned his degree. They were married October 23, 1949, and lived together in love and devotion for 59 years.
Don was a World War II Navy veteran, serving as an Ensign commander of an LCT, with action in the South Pacific.
He retired from John Deere Harvester Works, after 33 years of service as an Industrial Engineer, where his integrity in his work earned him many plaudits as he retired in 1984.
He was then recruited to work at Skills, Inc. where he taught young people work skills until 1993.
Don served as an elder in the Community of Christ until he was superannuated with honor in 2003. He was loved by many of his church friends.
Don's children were an important part of his life, too. He financed higher education for all four children, no small sacrifice on his part. (They are ever grateful to their wonderful dad who cared enough to give them this key to success in life.)
