Doris Wherry, 91, of Orion, died Friday, December 14, 2018, at UnityPoint Trinity-Rock Island.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, December 21, 2018, at Beulah Presbyterian Church, Orion. Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m., Thursday, at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion. Burial will be at Beulah Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Beulah Presbyterian Church or Augustana Public Radio Information Service (APRIS). In lieu of flowers, Doris prefers chocolate.
Doris was born in Galesburg, IL, on July 4, 1927, to D. Reece and E. Viola VanWinkle Jones. She married Richard F. Wherry on April 2, 1949, in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on February 20, 1964. She attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA, and later received a master’s degree from Western Illinois University. In 1987, she married George A. Maxwell. He passed in 1998.
She worked as school librarian in Orion High School for 20 years, and later at Western District Library, Orion. A member of Beulah Church since 1957, she was active as Sunday school teacher, deacon, and elder. She read for APRIS, was a member of Friendship Force of the Quad Cities and chaperoned groups for People-to-People High School Student Ambassador Program. She loved travel, theater, reading and learning.
Survivors include her children, Donald R. Wherry, Ross W. (Donna Kerfoot) Wherry, Maryan Wherry, Chon (Sharon) Wherry; daughter-in-law, Diana Wherry. Also, Marjorie (Richard) Klein, Robert (Sandy) Maxwell, George B. (Joyce) Maxwell, Mary (Brian) Christianson, Edwin Maxwell, John (Joan) Maxwell; 21 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Richard and George, sister Melba Deckard, and son Michael.
