Dorothy Hunter Cruson Hagberg departed from this life to be with our heavenly father surrounded by her loving family at her daughter’s home on November 7, 2016, having only recently celebrated her 100th birthday with her family.
Funeral services will be held at 11 s.m. Monday, November 14, 2016, at First Covenant Church, 3303 41st Street, Moline, IL. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, November 13, 2016, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memorial Estate. Memorials may be made to Dorothy’s family for a fund to be established in her name.
Dorothy was born August 9, 1916 to Mark & Daisy (Kinkaid) Hunter in Calamus, Iowa. She graduated from Calamus High where she was a drummer in the band and earned recognition for her skills as a guard in basketball. Dorothy married Howard Cruson in August of 1934 and moved to Rock Island. Of this union, was born a daughter, Janice.
Dorothy worked various jobs including at Moline Iron Works. During WWII, she worked as “Rosie the Riveter” for JI Case making airplane parts.
A friend introduced Dorothy to Donald Hagberg whom she married on September 10, 1948, in St. Charles, IL. She and Donald celebrated nearly 50 years of marriage before his death in September 1997.
Dorothy & Don operated the “Spot” Restaurant in Rock Island for several years, and she later waitressed at Harold’s On the Rock.
Y&S Licorice Factory was the last employer lucky enough to employ Dorothy. Her grandchildren especially loved the licorice samples she always shared until retiring as a supervisor after 25 years.
Dorothy was a devoted member of First Covenant Church in Moline. She enjoyed spending time with Women’s Circle and serving on the cleaning crew.
Dorothy loved working in her yard, planting and caring for her flowers and continued mowing her lawn until she was 95 years young!
One of Dorothy’s greatest joys from the time they were born, were her grandchildren. She & Don spent most of their Sundays driving into the Iowa countryside to be with them.
Dorothy always made special cookies and candies for holidays and birthdays. And everyone in the family looked forward to the delicious korv (Swedish potato bologna) she & Don loved sharing.
This gracious, kind, giving lady will be so, very missed, but remembered warmly by everyone whose life she touched. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Jan Byerly; grandchildren, Coni (Tom) Daufeldt, Durant, IA, Dennis (Janie Goettsch) Byerly, Bettendorf, IA, Deb Paper, Wilton, IA, Christie (Craig) Simpson, Richardson, TX, Jeff Byerly, Sanford, FL, Shelly (Glenn) Sorgenfrey, Durant, IA, Steve Byerly, Altamonte Springs, FL, Kim Byerly (Mike) Orlando, FL, Melissa Muskopf, Rock Island, IL; 14 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; siblings, Esther Donahue, Jack Hunter, and Ward Hunter; and grandson, Mike Byerly.
