Dorothy Jean (Sten) Hultgren

Dorothy Jean (Sten) Hultgren, 93 of Moline, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Overlook Village Senior Living, Moline.

There will be a visitation from 9-11 a.m., Saturday, June 25, 2022, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline. An additional visitation will follow from 1-2 p.m., on Saturday at Augustana Lutheran Church in Andover, with the funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Andover Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, Moline or Compassus Hospice, Moline.

Dorothy was born on March 18, 1929, in Moline, the daughter of Eric and Myrtle (Bodine) Sten. Dorothy was employed by John Deere Plow Company after graduating from Moline High School. She married Robert Hultgren, the love of her life on June 19, 1949, and moved to Colorado for Robert to pursue his master’s degree. They eventually settled in Joliet, Illinois and adopted three children, Beverly, Kit and Paula. Dorothy was a constant for her family, with dinner predictably at 5, being a frequent room-mom, making home sewn outfits, and hosting birthday parties with a cake shaped dress for barbie. She was generous to all, especially her dog, Bella, but don’t mess with her kroppkakor! She was an immaculate housekeeper and you were never more than a few feet away from a Swedish knick-knack in her home. She composed countless daily emails to her cousin Birgitta in Sweden. She taught her family how to make Swedish pancakes, and the treasured domino game “42”, once declaring “step aside, I’ve got this 84 hand!”

She worked as executive secretary at Cintas after the children were grown, then moved with Robert back to the Quad Cities to care for her aging parents. She was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Moline and met monthly with her “lunch bunch” group from high school of sixty plus years. Dorothy moved to Overlook Village Senior Living in 2018 following a stroke. She was lovingly cared for by their staff like she was a member of their own families. Words cannot express our gratitude.

Survivors include her children, Beverly Kwasigroch, Kit (Darryl) May, Paula Randall; grandchildren, Stephanie Cicero, Matthew Spain, Jacqueline and Andrew Kwasigroch, Nicholas and Eric May and Stacey Todd; and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Marybelle Nichoson and grandson Jeffrey Spain.
