Dorothy Ann Oberling Todd, age 86, of Swedona, Illinois, died Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Hammond Henry Hospital, Geneseo, Illinois.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Swedona Lutheran Church, 1493 Knoxville Road, Lynn Center, Illinois. Inurnmemt is at Swedona Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Dorothy asked for memorials to be made to Swedona Lutheran Church or District 228 % Millikin Elementary School, 920 S. Congress Street, Geneseo, Illinois 61254-1808. Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd. Orion, Illinois is assisting the family.
Dorothy Ann Oberling Todd was born October 27, 1924 to Charles and Eunice Leach Oberling of Columbus, Illinois. She was the youngest of four children, Ethel Fay, Union, Ohio, Ray Oberling, deceased in infancy, and Donald Oberling, Clayton, Illinois.
She lived with her family on a 120 acre farm in Adams County her first seventeen years. She attended Hazelwood School for eight years. It was a one room rural school 1 ½ miles from her home. She graduated as valedictorian of her class from Maplewood High School, Camp Point, Illinois in 1942. She was awarded a four-year State College Scholarship and graduated from Western Illinois University with Honors. Her training was in Childhood Education and she taught school for 32 years in Moline, Crystal Lake, Sherrard, and Geneseo - all Illinois schools.
On July 23, 1949 she married J.W. Todd in the First Christian Church, Columbus, Illinois. They had four children-Martha Ann Hulett, New Windsor, Illinois; Thomas Jay Todd, Wheaton, Illinois; Julia Marie Hillman, Aledo, Illinois; and Jill Elizabeth Sime, Racine, Wisconsin. There are four grandsons, Brandon, Jason and Erik Todd of Wheaton and Nicholas Sime of Racine, Wisconsin.
Dorothy was a member of the Swedona Lutheran Church. She was a member of the National Educators Honorary Society of Delta Kappa Gamma. During her active teaching career, she received recognition through the Those Who Excel Award given by the Illinois State Board of Education. She received the Life Time Membership Award from the National Parent Teachers Association.
She enjoyed writing, reading, flower gardening, travel, and most of all people of all ages.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J.W. Todd; children, Martha Ann Hulett and Julia Marie Hillman; brothers, Ray Oberling, deceased in infancy, and Donald Oberling; and sister, Ethel Fay.
