Dorothy M. Zwicker, 83, of Coal Valley died May 8, 2007 after a long courageous battle with breast cancer.
Funeral services will be 10a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2007 at Beulah Presbyterian Church, Orion. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 p.m. at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, Beulah Presbyterian Church, or Rock Island County 4-H Extension Foundation.
Dorothy was born October 29, 1923 in Davenport to Walter and Mary Keppy Dengler. She graduated from Davenport High School in 1941. She married Maynard Zwicker on September 21, 1949 at her parents home. He preceded her in death on June 8, 1978.
She and her husband began farming in Rural Twp. in 1949 and she continued farming after his death. She was a member of Beulah Presbyterian Church for the majority of her life where she was an Elder, member of the Memorial Committee and TTS. She also taught Sunday school and was instrumental in the placement of the stainglass windows in the church.
Dorothy had been actively involved in 4-H since the age of 8. She was a 4-H leader for 37 years for the Rural True Blues in Rock Island County until her death. Prior to that she was a 10 year member and 4-H leader for several years in Sheridan Twp, IA. She attended 13 annual conferences of the North Central Regional 4H Leaders Forum in all 13 states. In 1977 she was the winner of the 4-H Alumni Award. In 2005 she received The Friend of 4-H Award by the Rock Island County Extension Office in grateful recognition for her support in 4-H. In 2005 she also received the 4-H Award of the Sapphire Clover for 35 years of service to 4-H and the Salute to Excellence Award which is a lifetime volunteer award from Northwestern Illinois. She was also a member of National Suffolk Association of Missouri, Rock Island County Association of HCE Rural Unit, and Rock Island Co. Farm Bureau.
Dorothy also enjoyed doll shows and antique shows. She was a member of the Illinois Blackhawk Trail Dolls, United Federation of Doll Clubs, Inc. and the Ginny Doll Club. Her special interests were her grandchildren and youth development. She also enjoyed gardening, flowers, working in her yard, livestock and her home. She enjoyed the Dengler and Keppy family reunions and took special pleasure in all family gatherings. Quiet time was made more enjoyable by her pets Pepsi and Molly.
