E. Irene Sundberg, age 83, of Moline, died Saturday, April 14, 2012 at her residence.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline, Visitation is Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial is at Rose-Lawn Memorial Estate, Moline. Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church or Viking Scholarship Fund.
Irene was born October 7, 1928 in Moline, the daughter of Axel and Esther Vik Carlson. She married Leonard Sundberg on August 13, 1955 in Moline. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1999.
Irene graduated from Moline High School in 1947 and Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota in 1951. She received her M.A. in Ancient History from the University of Illinois in 1952. After being a "stay at home mom," Irene taught mentally disabled young adults. Her employment history concludes with the State of Illinois as an adjudicator. Since retiring in 1993, she has been an after-school volunteer and tutored grade schoolers.
Irene was very involved in church and community activities. She was a 59-year member of Clara Lodge #118 of the Viking Club of Moline. She held various offices including Chief and currently served on the Scholarship Committee. She was also named "Viking of the Year" in 2004 for her contributions. Irene was a dedicated Viking who had contributed much to her lodge and the growth of the Moline Vikings In addition, Irene was very involved with Nobel Lodge of Vasa, also holding various positions in that organization. Irene had been active in her church, serving as newsletter editor and on several committees and circles. She was a member of the Council of Abused Women and Children, active with the March of Dimes Children's Therapy Center, and worked with several local charitable organizations such as the 20th Century Women's Club, and Kings Daughters.
Irene had many passions. Her love and devotion to her three grandchildren, involvement in organizations, reading, completing crossword puzzles, and playing bridge were instrumental in her life. She enjoyed the camaraderie with her friends of many years through her bridge groups.
