Earl L. "Babe" Smith, age 76, of Moline, died Monday, September 27, 2004 at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 1, 2004 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 - 7:00 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. with military rites conducted by American Legion Post # 246.
Babe was born March 5, 1928 in Davenport, Iowa the son of Charles and Anna Holmes Smith. He married Judith B. Johnson on October 8, 1949 in Moline.
Babe was employed by the railroad and then later at Oscar Mayer. He was a golf pro first at Emeis Golf Course, where he was an assistant to Bob Fry. He later was the golf pro at Mill Creek Country Club in Milan . He retired from Kelly's Potato Chips and later worked for Nevada Bob's Golf Shop, and Professional Golf.
Babe was a Navy World War II veteran. He was his son's baseball coach at Lincoln School and John Deere Junior High School. Babe was a Life Member of Oakwood Country Club, and enjoyed his Florida golf outings, and was proud of his 17 Holes in One. At one time he held the course record of 63 at Emeis. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
