Edith Jane Fischer

February 3, 1930 — August 26, 2004

Edith Jane Fischer, 74 of Gravois Mills, MO formerly of Moline died August 26, 2004 in Jefferson City, MO.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, September 2, 2004 at Orion United Methodist Church with Rev. Sharon Potter officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion. Burial will be at Western Township Cemetery, Orion. Memorials may be made to a special fund set up in her name at Good Shepherd Care Center Versaiiles, MO.
Edith was born February 3, 1930 in Quincy, IL to Willis P. and Naomi (Kipp) Massingill. She moved to Moline as a child where at age 14, she met Donald Fischer. She and Don graduated from Moline High school in 1948. In 1949 she and Don were married in old First Baptist Church in Moline.
Edith was a secretary for the former T.B. Sanitarium in Rock Island. She later worked for Walt Mayes at Black Hawk College GED center. They moved to Gravois Mills in 1983.
Edith fought very hard to come back from a massive stroke on Easter Sunday 2004. Not expected to survive, she amazed everyone with her courage and determination, even though she had paralysis on her right side and much difficulty with speech. Her recovery was largely due to the dilligence and care from the staff at Good Shepherd Care Center in Versaiiles MO. Speceial gratitude is made to Sarah Eckhloff, her occupational therapist who worked with Edith. Sarah made Edith work hard while reminding her "no cheating allowed girlfriend", when Edith tried to use her good side to do things. Just a few weeks ago Edith suprised them all by getting up out of her wheelchair by herself and walking with the parallel bars as her only support. Now, without "cheating", Edith is walking the streets of Heaven free of pain. Sarah, Edith loved you and we want to thank you and all those involved for the love and care you gave her.
