Edward F. Sims, Sr., 85 of Sherrard died February 18, 2006 at his home.
Per the wife's wishes there was a private family graveside service at Cable Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Richland Grove Township Cable Community. Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd. assisted the family.
Edward was born December 10, 1920 in Marquette, KS to Benjamin and Nora Barney Sims.
Edward grew up in an isolated farming area in Kansas and attended a one room school at Morgan KS and attended Bluff City, KS High School.
All through his life, he was working the land and caring for the animals, horses and cattle. When he was fourteen, he left the Kansas farm in the 30's. He made three trips on the rails, spent one year on ranches in Colorado and worked the potato harvest there. He went to Iowa and worked on his aunt's farm, then went to his Uncle Len Tomlinson's farm near Sherrard. He went to Chicago and apprenticed as a tool and die maker. That is where his love for metal developed.
He and Vera Kreydich married September 13, 1942 in the Methodist Church in Warrenton, MO. He bought a farm in New Trexton, MO in 1947. In 1956 the family moved to a farm near Sherrard, IL where lived until his death.
Edward invented a hay loader, he served as Richland Grove Township supervisor, where he was instrumental in building 7 bridges and the township building. He was a member of the IL Sate Stock Horse Association and went on their 100 mile trail rides for ten years. He served as trail boss for a time. He worked at New Windsor Fair and IRA Rodeo for at least 40 years, building pens and chutes in addtion to working with animals. Many years he served as superintendent of horse shows at the fair.
He worked at at bettering the community all his life.
He and his wife raised two fine children. Jeannie Lillpop of Grand Junction, CO has a Master of Arts degree and is teaching advanced children in English. Ed Sims, Jr. is owner of Sims LP Gas Corp and lives south of Milan. His grandchildren are; Corene (Dr. Stan) Jack, Christine (Ryan) Houdek, Amy (Eric) Gustavson, Kendra (Zack) Beamon, Heather (Brian) Jochum and Bill Sims. His great grandchildren are Nathaniel Thomas Jack and Kyle Beamon.
