Dr. Edward W. D. Smith, 87, of Moline, IL, died Thursday, May 28, 2015, at Genesis Medical Center - Silvis Campus, Silvis, IL.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. At a later date, the family will hold a private inurnment at National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal, where military honors will be conducted by Moline American Legion Post 246. Memorials may be made to Special Olympics.
Ed was born on July 15, 1927, in Detroit, MI, the son of Clinton F. and Hazel Donnell Leslie Smith. He married Janet R. Smith on August 18, 1950. He graduated from Eastern Michigan University and then started his teaching career at the Wayne County Training School in Detroit. There, he taught industrial arts, where he found his love for teaching children. Ed graduated from University of Illinois with an Ed. D. He was the Director of Special Education for Blackhawk Area Special Education District, retiring 27 years ago.
Ed was a veteran, having proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. Ed was a member of CEC (Council for Exceptional Children) and Kiwanis. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed remodeling. Ed was a life-long Detroit Tiger fan. He had a passion for family and loved visiting with all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his loving wife, Janet; children, Gail Smith Pitcher, Moline, Meg (Chuck) Hott, Moline, Jill (Rick) Knott, Belvidere, Ted Smith, Moline, Tad (Diane) Smith, Princeton, IL, and Edward (Susan) Smith, II, Nashotah, WI; grandchildren, Kelly (Don) Peterson, Chad Pitcher, Jenna ( Ryan) Rasche, Graham (Kim) Hott, Ben (Kristin) Hott, Holly Hott, Sarah Hott, Matt Knott, Jamie Knott, Jeff Knott, Tara (Eric Prybil) Smith-Prybil, Brooke (Paul Kind) Smith-Kind, Nicole (Christian Fitzpatrick) Smith-Fitzpatrick, Justin Smith, Ethan (Lauren) Smith, Aubrey Smith, Blayne (Molly) Smith, Dustin (Julie) Smith, and Edward (Megan) Smith, III;
great grandchildren, Alex Peterson, Mitch Peterson, Jake Peterson, Maddie Peterson, Maggie Pitcher, Kelsie Pitcher, Emily Pitcher, Kate Marie Pitcher, Carter Rasche, Peyton Rasche, Sydney Hott, Dylan Hott, Ethan Hott, Vivian Hott, Caden Prybil, Bryson Prybil, Teegan Prybil, and Griffin Prybil, Lyla Kind, G. Jackson Kind, Gray Fitzpatrick, Eli Smith, Kieran Smith, Grady Smith, Madden Smith, Hudson Smith, Rowan Smith, and Edward Smith, IV; brothers, David Smith, MI, and Robbin Smith, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters.
