Elbert Smick, longtime teacher and well known photographer of Rock Island died December 3, 2004 at Rosewood Care Center at the age of 94.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be at Memorial Park, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Island.
Elbert was born October 3, 1910 in Bushnell, IL to Clair Fleming and Eva Eckert Smick. He married Martha Meyer on July 23, 1950 in Strawberry Point, IA. She preceded him in death on January 29, 1981. He later married Dorothy Liljegren on March 16, 1985. She preceded him in death on February 9, 2001.
Elbert was a US Navy combat photgrapher with the Seabees during WWII where he was stationed in the South Pacific.
Elbert was a teacher for the Moline School district for 20 years, retiring in 1970 where he taught elementary education for Horace Mann, Moline. He also taught summer school at Augustana for deaf and hard of hearing and taught photography for the Rock Island adult education program for 17 years.
Elbert was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Island. He was also past president of the Scottish-American Society of the Quad-Cities, and a member of the Augustana Historical Society. He was active in the local camera clubs and was a star exhibitor in Photographic Society of America. Many will remember Elbert for his slide programs given at various organizations.
He was a devout Christian who was strong in his faith.
