Eleanor was born to Anny Marie Johannson and Albin Sandell at Moline Lutheran Hospital on August 29, 1923. Born Maj Lisbeth Eleanor Sandell she attended First Lutheran Sunday School where she was confirmed. She was an only child. She was a graduate of John Deere Jr. High being part of the first class to attend that new building. She graduated Moline High School in 1941. She worked at Augustana Book Concern and later as a "time keeper" at John Deere Harvester. Eleanor remained very active in church activities from confirmation through the years of Luther League. She met Willard C. Braaten through church group activities. He graduated from Augustana in 1943 and went to work for Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, Illinois. The production of Penicillin and Heparin qualified him for a draft deferrable position. She married Willard at First Lutheran Church June 2, 1945 and moved to Waukegan, Illinois where Willard pursued his career in production engineering of many valuable medications during his tenure there. Eleanor and Willard had two daughters, Ann Lenore and Mary Ellen. After serving Abbotts for 20 years, Willard went into business forming Norse Chemical Laboratories and inventing Sugar Twin in Cudhay, Wisconsin where they lived for four years. Eleanor and Willard then moved to California in 1968 where they lived for 5 years. Eleanor loved her life in California; church groups, bridge and golf took up much of her time.
