It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Elmer Maurice Stenzel, of Coal Valley, IL on June 18, 2024, at the age of 88.
A private family farewell to Elmer will be held at a later date. Esterdahl Mortuary and Crematory, Ltd., Orion are assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Orion, IL where Elmer & Janet are members.
Elmer was born on January 22, 1936, in Osco, IL, to Maurice and Helen (Schlenzen) Stenzel. He graduated from Orion High School in 1954 and was united in marriage to the love of his life for 69 years, Janet Townsend, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Geneseo (Edford Township) on October 9, 1954.
Elmer farmed with his father and older brother, Ron, before transitioning to a career at Ametek in East Moline and later as Transportation Manager at John Deere Harvester Works in East Moline, where he retired in 1994. In addition, Elmer, along with his brothers, founded Stenzel Brothers Auction Service in 1974, a business that continues to thrive today.
Elmer had many accomplishments and hobbies and was renowned for his exceptional humor. He loved his family, friends, and church, often volunteering his time to help others. Elmer’s warm and generous spirit touched many lives.
Elmer is survived by his beloved wife, Janet; his children, Greg (Beverly) Stenzel of Raleigh, NC, and Jill (Kyle) Minnaert of Coal Valley, IL; his grandchildren, Dr. Jeremy Hartsock (Courtney Fung) of Lansing, MI, and Allie (Eric) Klatt of Colona, IL; and his great-grandchildren, Asa, Summer, and Kinnick. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carolyn Stenzel of Geneseo, IL, Jeannette Stenzel of Orion, IL, Joan and Dave VanNest of Port Byron, IL, and Jay Townsend of East Moline, IL, as well as several nieces and nephews and their children.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Helen Stenzel, and his brothers, Ron and John Albert Stenzel.
Elmer was a friend to many and the best husband and father any family could ask for. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to Hammond Henry Hospital, Long Term Care, and Mike Vanderostyne special family friend, Compassus Hospice and the many doctors, caregivers, etc. for their care and compassion during this trying time.
Elmer will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
