Ethel Marie Anderson

Ethel Marie Anderson, age 97 of Moline passed away on October 31, 2004 at Trinity Medical Center,
7th Street Campus, Moline.
Funeral services will be 10a.m. Friday, November 5, 2004 at Salem Lutheran Church where she was a member. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 - 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church, United Parkinson Foundation or Augustana Endowment.
Ethel was born on October 18, 1907 in Moline, the daughter of John and Esther Sundquist Pearson. She married Sigurd Anderson on October 20, 1927. He preceded her in death on January 17, 1992.
Ethel graduated from Augustana College in where she earned a B.A. degree in education.
Ethel was employed as a teacher for the Moline School District, teaching English at John Deere Junior High School for 20 years, retiring in 1973. Through her career in teaching she was a member of National Association of Retired Teachers and a lifetime member of the Parent Teacher Association.
On October 19, 1997 she was the recipient of the Swedish Council Award of Merit honoring her for her work in promoting the Swedish culture in America. She was instrumental in introducing the Midsummer Festival, the Santa Lucia program and the May Festival on Augustana's campus. She formed a conversational Swedish class, was involved in a student exchange program and served as president of the Augustana Historical Society. She also hosted several trips to Scandinavian countries. She was honored in 1966 on a trip to Sweden when she was visiting Eskilstuna, once a sister city of Moline.
She was a long-time member of Salem Lutheran Church, Moline. She was a member of American Association of University Women, the Harmony Circle of Kings Daughters, Chapter IS of P.E.O., the American Scandinavian Association of Augustana, Moline Woman's Club, the Vasa Club, and the Independent Order of Svithoid. She has also volunteered with the American Cancer Society, the YWCA, the International Folk Festival and Sigma Phi Gamma, a philanthropic society, where she was the charter member of the Delta Eta Chapter. She also volunteered at the former Lutheran Hospital, Moline and was a member of the Zion Hospital Circle. Her hobby was cooking and baking for family and friends.
Survivors include her son Larry of Moline, her daughter Judy Anderson of San Diego, CA; grandchildren Melissa Nicholson of Moline, and Kimberly and Jacob Piggy of Albany, Oregon; great-grandchildren Andrew & Sienna and Katie & Chelsea.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Edwin and Raymond Pearson.
