Eugene (Gene) M. Morrison, 101 of the Lighthouse, Silvis and formerly of Moline passed away March 24, 2011 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 28th, 2011 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
Eugene was born on October 15, 1909 to James and Elsie Barney Morrison. He married Vera Badowska on February 13, 1946 in Liege, Belgium. She preceded him in death on March 30, 2005.
Eugene was a partner with Morrison and Bergren IGA grocery store in Moline, retiring in 1966 after 18 years. Gene, Milt Bergren and Clifford Countryman were close friends. They operated the business in the Highland area of Moline, After closing the store, Gene continued working part time with area meat cutters.
Gene grew up on a farm in rural Iowa. He rode a horse to a one-room schoolhouse. He helped his family with work on the farm after school.
Prior to WWII, Gene and a friend hitchhiked across the country, stopping to earn cash as the traveled. Gene was a Tech Sergeant in the Army during WWII. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for the Battles of Rhineland and Battle of the Bulge.
Gene enjoyed almost all activities associated with the outdoors. This included fishing, hunting, camping (Holiday Ramblers Club), cutting firewood and gardening. Most of all Gene enjoyed his family and friendships he made over the years.
Gene was a great father, grandfather and friend.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Don (Barbara) Morrison, Moline and Granddaughter Christine (Aaron) Ferber, Chicago

all the wonderful care and compassion that they provided to Gene.
