Frances Laverne Hornback

January 4, 1929 — September 8, 2010

Frances "Laverne" Hornback
Laverne ended her earth's journey on September 8, 2010, after living her last 19 years with cancer. She is now with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her fortitude amazed family, friends and doctors.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 11th at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline with burial following at Rose-Lawn Memorial Estate. Visitation will be from
4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Friends and family are invited to an open house at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Milan to continue a Celebration of her Life starting at 12:30 p.m.
Laverne was born on January 4, 1929 the daughter of George L. and Naomi B. Johnson Maddox in Bald Knob, Arkansas. She enjoyed growing up on a farm. In high school she played guard position on the girl's basketball team, a sport she dearly loved. She enjoyed watching basketball games on TV, especially the Hawkeyes. She married Adam Masterson and in 1952 moved their family to the QC area. She later married Lindell Hornback. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Laverne entered the work force in 1967; first baking at Rock Island High School, then became a cook's help at Lutheran Hospital. When Friendship Manor opened, she was hired as Head Cook and with a lot of hard work and schooling, became the Director of Food Service for 15 years. Laverne loved working with the residents and her co-workers. She thoroughly enjoyed the"Busy Hands" sewing club when she resided at the Coventry Apts. In 2003 with her health declining, she moved home with her daughter and son-in-law and became a participant at In Touch Adult Day Care, a program she dearly loved and missed when she was no longer able to attend. Other joys included crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, reading, flowers, and bird watching, but her greatest joys were her grand and great grand kids, and three little grand doggies, Molly, Kaiya and Bouncer.
Those left to her memory are daughter and son-in-law, Fran and Dan Ouradnik, Milan; son James Masterson; grand and great grandchildren: Mindy, Cliff, Jenna, and Clayton Donald ,Chatham, IL; Mark and Shelly Masterson, Mt. Pleasant, IA; Matt and Coleton Masterson, W. Burlington, IA; Mike Frerkes, Bettendorf, IA; Brett Frerkes, Omaha, NE; sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Ancel Grubbs, Rowlett, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lindell and niece Gail Grubbs.
In lieu of flowers, Laverne requested that memorials be made to In Touch Adult Day Care, Moline.
Although Laverne had more than her share of trials and heartbreak, she never complained or lost her faith in God. One of her favorite quotes was "and this too shall pass" and her favorite gospel song "It is well with my Soul" clearly states how Laverne lived her entire life - giving unselfishly to others.
