Fred Charles Martens, age 92, of Rock Island, formerly of Swedona, died Saturday, November 17, 2007 at his home.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, November 23, 2007 at Swedona Lutheran Church. Visitation is Wedneseday, November 21, 2007 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., 1301 4th Street, Orion, Illinois. Burial will be in Swedona Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be made to his family for a fund to be established.
Fred was born March 24, 1915 in Gothenburg, Nebraska, the son of John and Marie Paben Martens. He married Margaret Poggendorf on November 2, 1935 in Gothenburg, Nebraska.
Fred worked at the Groth Saw Mill Company in Deer River, Minnesota. He then worked for JI Case Experimental. Fred retired in 1982 from the Sherrard School District. He worked in the maintenance department and was also a bus driver. He was a member of the Swedona Lutheran Church. He was a Sunday School Superintendent, member of Church Council and various other church committees. Fred was a carpenter and enjoyed making Birthday and Christmas presents for his family. He also made the stained glass display for his church.

Fred was preceded in death by daughter, Carol Jean Falk; Grandson, Kevin Carver; brother, Paul Martens; and sisters Elvina Martens, and Elvera Seedorf.
