Galen Russell Marr

Galen Russell Marr, age 69, of Moline, passed away Friday, November 30, 2012 at Trinity, Rock Island.

Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Salem Lutheran Church, 1724-15th Street, Moline. Visitation will be from 9:30-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salem Lutheran Church or Quad City Animal Shelter. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. Moline is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Galen was born September 9, 1943, in Moline, the only child of Elmer R. and Hazel L. Boosinger Marr. Galen married Sally J. Carey on August 22, 1964. Galen graduated from Moline High School, attended BlackHawk College, and graduated from University of Idaho, Moscow, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry. Galen's whole career was with the U.S. National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Galen graduated from the Horce M. Albright Training Center at Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, in May of 1967. During his career he was a Park Ranger at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, CA; Petrified Forest National Park, AZ; Everglades National Park, FL, and Lowell National Historical Park, MA where he retired as Chief Park Ranger of Protection in 1997, completing 30 years of service.

Galen was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease in 1997. His wife, Sally, was able to donate a kidney to Galen at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison which was very successful for almost 10 years. During Galen's younger years he was an avid hunter, and after retirement Galen and Sally enjoyed several years of golfing. Galen was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, where he was active, and very devoted to God.

Surviving is his wife of 48 years; 4 children, each of whom was born in a different state; Jennifer (Rene) Hauschulz of Penacook, NH; Jon (Anne) of Damascus, MD; Peter (Heather) of Manchester, NH; and Philip (Erin) of Frederick, MD. Seven grandchildren: Cpl. Robert (Cpl. Brittany) Webb, Camp Lejeune, NC, Rhiannon Webb, Manchester, NH, Nathan and Carey Marr Damascus, MD, Ellie and Camden Marr Manchester, NH and Caleb Marr, Frederick, MD and two great grandsons: Luke Andrew and Cael Niel Webb, Jacksonville, NC.

Galen was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Hazel Marr.
