George M. "Maurie" Hall, age 70, of Port Byron, died Saturday, December 22, 2007 at Good Shepherd Hospice, Auburndale, FL.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 29, 2007 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation is Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at a later date in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice (105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale, FL 33823).
George was born July 15, 1937 in Keithsburg, IL. the son of Lyle Edwin "Hallie" and Marian Cecilia (Fleming) Hall. In 1955 Mr. Hall married Virginia Law and had 5 children. In 1964 he married Shirley Moore and had 2 sons. Mr. Hall met Nadine (Nolan) Stibolt and after a whirlwind courtship they married on July 10, 1971 and he became the father to her 3 children. Their life together was a love story for 36 wonderful years.
After high school, Mr. Hall joined the U.S. Navy and served for 6 years as an X-ray tech and a Hospital Corpsman. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, Mr. Hall worked various jobs for several years and in 1971 became a nursing student at St. Lukes School of Nursing, Davenport, IA graduating as the only man in his class in 1973. He worked for the Veterans Administration as a Registered Nurse. He then became an over-the road truck driver and drove for several companies in the Midwest finally retiring, after 11 years with Jevic Transportation in 2004.
Mr. Hall was a true "outdoorsman" and was content as long as he was working outdoors. In the 90's, he had an ostrich farm in Eldrige and later in Calamus, IA where he raised both ostriches and emus. He enjoyed raising a vegetable garden, camping, fishing and playing cards. He had a terrific sense of humor and would play practical jokes on anyone and everyone. For the last 4 winters he and his wife went to Lake Wales, FL where he could catch the 'big ones."
Mr. Hall is survived by his wife Nadine, Port Byron; 4 daughters Sherry (Paul) Gustafson, East Moline; Debbie (Leo) Budo, Las Vegas, NV; Gina (David) Smith, Las Vegas, NV; Misty (John) Slawinski, Romulus, MI; 6 sons, George, Jr., Davenport; Daniel (Tabitha), Norwalk, IA; Danny Scott (Diana) , Muscatine, IA; Kevin (Bridget) East Moline; Gary (Brenda) Stibolt, Bettendorf; and Donnie (Mary) Stibolt, Brighton, CO; a brother Lyle (Susie) Hall, Jr., Seaton, IL and 4 sisters, Janis (Dwight) Collison, Orlando, FL; Mellany (Tommy) Pullen, Chesapeake, VA; Sarah Joy Bartosch, Coralville, IA; and Judy (Jim) Kaple, St. Mary, FL. He has 38 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Allie Svoboda.
