Helen A. Gilmore, 86, of Silvis, IL, died Thursday, October 17, 2013, at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, IL.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline, IL. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, October 21, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Quad City Animal Welfare Center in Milan, IL.

Helen was born on October 9, 1927, in Lovilia, IA, the daughter of Glen and Fern (Roberts) Day. She graduated from Moline Senior High School in 1946 and later from the former Moline Business College. While a senior in high school she served in the Civil Air Patrol Cadets in World War II. She earned the rank of sergeant. After graduation she was employed at Bell Telephone Co. as a telephone switchboard operator when the office was located on Fifth Avenue in Moline. This was before dial and "the voice with a smile was with you for awhile".

Helen and Earl were married in the First Lutheran Church in Moline. He passed away in 1997. She had worked summers as a playground supervisor in several parks for the City of Moline Parks Department. She was employed by several quad-cities firms as bookkeeper and accounting technician. She received certificates in "Principles of Life Insurance" and "Insurance Accounting" from the insurance industry college, "Life Office Management Association" while employed at Republic Investors Life Insurance Co. in East Moline.

Helen retired from the former Moline Public Hospital in 1988 after 20 years as an accounting technician. She was a past member and past corresponding secretary for American Business Women's Association, Heritage Chapter, Moline. She was a charter member of the East Moline Ridgewood School PTA.

Since 1980, Helen operated her business "Helen's Doll Making Sewing and Creative Room" specializing in porcelain doll making, earning awards as far away as New York competitive shows. She learned the art of pillow lace making from the well-known lace maker and author, Doris Southard, of Cedar Rapids, IA.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Larry Tidwell; grandsons and spouses, Brad and Renée Tidwell and John and Diane Tidwell; great grandchildren, Kaitee, Jacob, Kyle and Amanda Tidwell; sister-in-law, Jeannine Day of Moline; nephews and spouses, Donavon and Theresa Day in the Navy stationed on the east coast, William and Sharon Day of Joliet, IL; niece, Deanne Nelson of Moline; many grandnieces and nephews who are all special.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl Gilmore; daughter, Kathleen Claire; brothers, Donald and Robert Day.
