Howard William Liljeberg, age 87, of Moline, died Friday, July 23, 2010 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.
A memorial service will be 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2010 with a visitation from 2:00-3:00 p.m. prior to the service at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Burial of cremains will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
Howard was born January 27, 1923 in Moline, the son of Hjalmar and Mary Liljeberg. He married Betty Jane "Neuy" (Neuhaus) on November 15, 1947 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on July 13, 2006.
Howard attended Erickson Elementary School, John Deere Jr. High School and graduated from Moline Senior High School in 1941. After graduating from high school, he was employed in the advertising Dept. of Deere & Co. and in the fall of 1941 he enrolled at Augustana College. He attended Augustana College and worked at Deere & Co. until Feb. 1943 when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Army Air Corp. as a navigator on B-24's flying 35 combat missions in the 15th Air Force over Europe. He was discharged from the services in Sept. 1945 as a 1stLt. He returned to Augustana College and graduated in1947 with a B.A. degree in Economics. He was a member of the POPS fraternity. He was employed by International Harvester at East Moline Works in various managerial positions, retiring in Sept. 1978. He was 6th ward alderman in the city of Moline from 1967-1975. Besides enjoying his family and friends, Howard loved the game of golf and was a member of Oakwood Country Club for many years.
