James "Jim" Laud

June 29, 1954 — April 2, 2025

East Moline, Illinois

James P. “Jim” Laud, 70, of East Moline, passed away Wednesday April 2, 2025, in the afternoon. His heart and lungs were unable to go on.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday April 7, 2025, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline. Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday April 6, 2025, at the funeral home. The burial will be at Moline Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jim Laud Trust, which will be established and used for youth pursuing skilled trades as a profession.

Jim was born on June 29, 1954, in Moline, the son of John P. and Daisie M. (Berdahl) Laud. He married Clara Longnecker in 1974 and together they had a son. Jim later married Tammy Saathoff on July 25, 1983, in Davenport. After more than 50 years, he “retired” as an operating engineer at Walter D. Laud Inc. Jim was a proud union member of Local 150.

Jim was a self-taught engineer, mechanic, fabricator and machinist who never stopped learning how to repair and build. He was generous with his skill and knowledge to help anyone who would ask. He had a nickname for everyone, and he had names given to him like, “mean ol uncle Jim”, “Big Daddy”, “Mr. Drysdale”, “UJ” and “Bronco Jimmy” – and he had the stories to back it up. His most cherished nickname though was “Papa the greatest”.

Jim was respected by many. He was a man of endless knowledge that so many gravitated towards. Jim also had many hobbies including radio-controlled helicopters, target shooting, restoring old cars, and spending time with his grandchildren. He had a colorful way of interacting with others which earned him the respect of all who he encountered. He was unconditional in his love and generosity as a father and grandfather.

Jim was a kind and giving man. His wit, humor and colorful vocabulary will be missed.

Survivors include his wife, Tammy; son, Damon Laud, Iowa City; daughter, Tabitha Denys, East Moline; grandchildren, Allison, Taryn, Ethan, Maxwell, Haleigh, Damon; sister, Linda Mattson, Florida; brother, Jack (Jodi) Laud, Moline; sister, Michelle Laud, Georgia; brother, Barry (Dawn) Laud, Moline.
