James "Rib King" Overton

James "Jim" "Rib King" Robert Overton, Sr., 85, of Coal Valley, IL, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, IA.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2013, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 2601 15th Street, Moline, IL. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline, IL. Burial will be at National Cemetery at Rock Island Arsenal where military honors will be conducted by Moline American Legion Post # 246. In lieu of flowers, it was Jim's wishes for memorials to be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he was a member and usher.

Jim was born January 20, 1928, in Troy, MO, the son of Sherman "Sam" and Ada (Chapman) Overton. He married Evelyn Miles. He later married Mary Suarez Niles on July 20, 1996, in Las Vegas, NV.

Jim began working at Farmall as a tractor driver. He established Jim's Rib Haven in Rock Island, IL in 1968 which made him the first African American man to own and operate a restaurant in the Quad Cities. Jim's Rib Haven is legendary for its secret sauce, making Jim a Quad Cities icon and featuring him on the Food Network. He enjoyed hunting, especially deer hunting, fishing, bowling, and traveling. Jim was a member of NAACP and a Lincoln car enthusiast.
