Mike was the son of Harold Campbell and Betty Patterson. He was born March 13th, 1949, in Danville, Illinois. Mike was raised on a farm in Southern Illinois and attended Rock Island High School, Black Hawk College, and Scott Community College. He was a long-time employee of IH Farmall and the Rock Island Arsenal.

At the age of 18, Mike enlisted in the Army. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of Spec 4 of the Fourth Infantry Division. Mike served during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970.
