Jane Ellen Clapp, age 42 died at home surrounded by her family on Monday, May 23,2005, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2005 at Esterdahl Mortury, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial is at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her children or the Jane E. Clapp Scholarship Fund for a High School Student going into teaching Special Education or Nursing.
She was born Jane Ellen Smith on August 25, 1962 in Galesburg, IL. to Bernard & Patricia Watkins Smith. The family moved to Moline, IL. in 1964. Jane attended Garfield Elementary, John Deere Jr. High, and Moline Senior High School, graduating in 1980. She was also a graduate of Black Hawk College and attended Western Illinois University. Jane married Frank Horvath Jr. on December 8, 1984 and they divorced in 1994, and remained friends. Jane married Richard Clapp on December 15, 2000. Jane was employed at Angelous Retirement Community as the Social Events Coordinator. She loved spending time with the residents and many of them became special friends.
The loves of her life were her family, especially her children. She spent many years being involved with parent groups and the Autism Society. Jane also loved attending her son Caleb's basketball gaames, Jordan's Special Olympic events, as well as her nieces and nephews activities. Jane was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was caring, compassionate, and devoted to the people she loved. She was special.
Throughout Jane's illness, she and her family were provided comfort by many special friends. Jane felt there were not enough words to express how appreciative she was of each person who reached out and touched her and her family.
Jane is survived by her loving & devoted husband Richard "Rick" Clapp; her greatest blessings in life, her sons Frank Jordan Horvath and Caleb John Horvath; her loving mother Patricia E. Smith ( Jim "Joe" Joseph); her wise & nurturing oldest sister Patty (Ed) Haskins of Dakota Dunes, SD; her sister and best friend Susan "Sue" Smith (Jeni Drahos) of Cedar Rapids, IA; her special brother Robert "Bob" Smith of DeWitt, IA; Step-daughters Andrea & Lisa Clapp of Silvis, IL.; Maternal grandmother Marie Watkins of Abingdon, IL; Nieces Sarah (Nate) Heinrich of Davenport,IA and Andrea (Steve) Larson of Charlotte, NC; Nephews Connor & Max Smith Drahos of Cedar Rapids, IA., In-laws Gary & Jeanine Clapp & family of Moline, IL. and Jim & Sandy Phillips & family of Silvis,IL.; Grandma Sharon Horvath of East Moline, IL. and special friend Stan Davis; as well as her little spitfire dog Muffin.
Mrs. Clapp was preceded in death by her beloved father Bernard E. Smith, and maternal grandfather Lloyd Watkins.
