John Eric Benson, 92 formerly of East Moline died August 11, 2004 in DePere, WI.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2004 at First Lutheran Church, 1230-5th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, Moline. Eric was born January 6, 1912 in Illinois to Emil and Emily Benson who were Swedish immigrants. He was named after an uncle who died on the Titanic. He married Narry Hazel Garrett on December 14, 1935 in East Moline.
Eric began his career with the Army Corp of Enginners and later worked at the Rock Island Arsenal as an accountant retiring in 1967 after 30 plus years.
Eric was an active member of the First Lutheran Church, Moline where he was Superintendent of Sunday School and was treasurer on the church board. He was a member of Thor Lodge # 9 Independent Order of Vikings where he served as treasurer. He was a member of East Moline Park Board. He was a star pitcher in the church league softball games at Riverside, pitiching many no hitters. He also coached Little League. He loved the time spent at their summer home on Washington Island in Door County. He was well known for his beautiful tenor voice.
He lived a very happy life. His enormous heart and his tender way touched many lives.
His warm spirit was a guiding light for those who needed an extra hand.
His humble way reminds us all every day that a man as kind and unselfish
as Eric only crossed your path once in a lifetime.
