John A. Caleo, 89, of East Moline, IL, died Monday, March 2, 2015, at Loyola University Medical Center, Chicago, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2015, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 201 1st Street, Colona. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Rosary at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2015, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be at National Cemetery at Rock Island Arsenal, where military honors will be conducted by Moline American Legion Post 246. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Patrick's Church or to Fr. Conroy's Vineyard of Hope.
John was born on June 7, 1925, in Rock Island, IL, the son of Nick and Francis (Campana) Caleo. He graduated from Rock Island High School and attended Moline Community College. He married Sally Kelsey on October 22, 1960, in Davenport, IA.
During World War II, he served in the United States Navy as a crewman on Navy aircraft in the North African and European Campaigns. While in the military, John graduated from Naval Training School (Radio) RCA Institutes, Inc., Aviation Free Gunnery Unit, and U.S. Naval Air Gunners School. Later, he was in management at the Army Weapons Command and The Armament Material Readiness Command Product Assurance Directorates. In 1981, John retired after 35 years of government service.
Following his retirement, John worked at Nomura Enterprises as the Director of Quality for 5 years. He was a member of the Moline American Legion Post 246 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2153 in Moline.
More than anything, John was a devoted husband, loving father, and beloved Papa to his grandchildren. Those who are fortunate to have been touched by him are dedicated to carry on his loving and giving spirit. He will be deeply missed.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Sally, who he has been married to for 54 years
