John H. Etzel

John H. Etzel, 87, of Rock Island, beloved husband and father, died Monday, January 29, 2018, at UnityPoint Health-Trinity Rock Island.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, February 2, 2018, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 2502-29th Avenue, Rock Island.  Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601-38th Avenue, Moline.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island.  Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Make-A-Wish Foundation.

John was born on January 12, 1931, in Moline, the son of Harry Wallace and Virginia Alice (Davis) Etzel.  He married Darlene Ann Steen on March 31, 1951 in Rock Island.

John was a graduate of Rock Island High School and had served in the U. S. Navy Reserve.  In his younger years, John had worked as a milk man at the Baker’s Dairy in Moline.  He had been employed as a final inspector at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1992.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene, Rock Island; daughters, Cindy (Howie) Dyer, Rock Island and Pam Nelson, Rock Island; grandchildren, Scott (Christina) Dyer, Bettendorf, Chad (Megan) Dyer, Colona, Andrea (Mike) Braddy, Rock Island, Johnathan (Ashlyn) Kiwala, Lake in the Hills, IL; great grandchildren, Jenna, Noah, Aden, Annika and Lila Dyer, Mia Dyer, Harrison, Leo, and Vivienne Braddy; sister, Shirley Ewing, East Moline.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Stan.
