John E. Nurse, 91, of East Moline, IL, formerly of Moline & Livermore, CO, died Friday, December 14, 2012, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline, IL.
Private family services will be held at the Blue Ridge Methodist Church and Cemetery, Chillicothe, IL. Memorials may be made to the Blue Ridge Methodist Church. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family with arrangements.
John Elwood Nurse was born on December 3, 1921, in Blue Ridge (Chillicothe, IL) the second son of Hugh and Bertha (Colwell) Nurse. He graduated from Chillicothe High School and enlisted in the Army, serving in the Pacific Theatre as a Staff Sgt. during WWII. Jack was employed with Illinois Bell Telephone for 42 years; he was in the Toll Dept. at the time of his retirement in 1981.
Jack belonged to Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline, IBEW Local 399, National Rifle Assoc., Telephone Pioneers and both the Rock Island and the Moline Masonic Lodges. In Colorado, he was a member of Chapel in The Pines, Red Feather Lakes, Aspen Club, and the Red Feather Historical Society. Jack was very proud to be selected for the Honor Flight in April of 2010.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Beverley Birkhahn. He is also survived by his three children, Linda Ekstam, Coal Valley, Brian (Sue) Nurse, Silvis, and Deborah Heileman, Moline; 10 grandchildren, Chris, Eric, Renee, Heath, Carrie, Ryan, Donnie, Nick, Adam, and Seth; 12 great grandchildren (number 13 is due in February of 2013); and 1 great great grandchild.
John was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Howard Nurse of Villa Park, and Tom Nurse of Peoria.
The family would like to thank the staffs of Hope Creek Care Center and Hospice Compassus as well as the staff of Dr. Paul Wang for their care and concern shown to Jack.
