John P. Palmer, age 84 of Coal Valley, died Saturday, April 7, 2007 at his home.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley. Visitation is from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd 6601-38th Avenue,Moline. Burial is in Coal Valley Cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion Post #246 Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley.
John was born January 4, 1923 in Washington, IA, the son of John P. and Mary Louise (Schmuell) Palmer. He married Normajeanne Williams on September 24, 1967 in Coal Valley. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2006.
John was a blacksmith and welder in World War II. He later worker as a sheet metal worker for Johnson Sheet Metal for 30 years, retiring in 1981 due to his health. John was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers International Union # 91 of Moline. He was also a member and past commander of the Moline American Legion # 246, where he was active with the fish fry and bingo. John was a former elder and usher of First Presbyterian Church, where he also served on various committees including the building committee. He was a member of 40/8 Voiture 237. John held a life membership with N.R.A. and belonged to the Milan Rifle Club. He enjoyed life, people and his passion was flowers. John was a gracious and compassionate man and his gift was being the family Peace Maker.
