Jon E. Forslund, 55, of East Moline, died at sunrise Thursday, June 23, 2005, after a hard-fought battle with lung cancer. He spent his last days at home surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Services are Monday, June 27, at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., Moline, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the memorial service. Private burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Moline.
Jon was born Sept. 1, 1949, in Moline, to Ida Kroeger and Viven Forslund. He graduated from Moline High School in 1967 and married Janine Witherspoon in 1974. The couple divorced in 1995.
Jon worked as a machine operator at Moline Welding for 25 years. He worked hard everyday in a dangerous job to provide for his children. He left in 2003 following his cancer diagnosis.
Jon was an avid photographer, winning several contests with his outdoor photography, although he would say his children were his favorite subjects. Other hobbies included history, astronomy and weather. He also loved the years he spent supporting his younger children in the UTHS Marching Band. He never even missed a Monday-night rehearsal.
Jon was generous with his time and love, always opening his door to family and friends in need of shelter and love.
Above all, Jon loved his family. He was proud of his three children everyday and his grandchildren, Hunt Mike and B, were the joy of his life. He was "always a kidder," loved to have fun, and until his last breath he lived each day to its fullest. He was the greatest dad and most wonderful Papa Jon in the world.
Jon is survived by his children and their significant others, Amanda and Brian Reffett, Carbon Cliff, Ian Forslund, Coal Valley, and Alyssa Sanders, Rock Island, and Anna Forslund and Julie Forehand, Herrin, IL., and his grandchildren, Hunter and Brenna Reffett, Carbon Cliff. Additional survivors include sisters, Cathe Otto, Plover, Wi., and Vickie Gingry, Rock Island, brother, Rob Forslund, Moline, niece and husband, Carissa and Jason Simmons, LeClaire, niece Jennifer Simpkins, Rock Island, and uncle, Robert "Bud" Kroeger, Coal Valley.
Jon was preceded in death by his father, Viven, in 1965, and his mother, Ida, in 2003.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Pathway Hospice.
